Travel may be difficult right now, but that doesn’t stop us from dreaming about new adventures and favourite destinations around the world.
Ann challenged me to answer some questions about my past, present, and future travels — so let’s dive in!
While it might seem like I should choose some hidden gem, my absolute favourite spot is The English Market in Cork. Not just a place to shop, it’s a feast for the senses.
As Lisa McInerney wrote in The Blood Miracles: "You could do it all day, inhaling. The coffee, the sugar and chocolate and warm cakes… the cheese, the tang of olives… the butcher stalls at the ends… the air then that hits you from the street outside." Mostly local produce is sold by friendly staff, often from family-run stalls that have been around for generations.
Stop by the Farmgate Cafe for tea or a bite. Sit on the balcony to watch shoppers, listen to the rapid Hiberno-English dialect, and soak up the vibrant local atmosphere — arguably the best accent and language in the country, in my biased opinion!
Choosing a favourite country and city is tough. After exploring many regions, I’ve fallen in love with Italy — the food, culture, and language are irresistible.
For a city, nothing beats Cork, Ireland. I feel most at home here. Often a gateway to the Wild Atlantic West, Cork has a thriving food scene, historic sites, and beautiful nearby beaches.
It would be Cork. Permanent? That’s the dream! Plans were in motion before COVID paused everything, but I hope to settle there soon.
I’d continue my career as a Nurse, likely in emergency medicine. But if I could dream, I’d turn my blog and freelancing into a full-time gig, working from a stylish riverside apartment with a balcony to plan new adventures.
The first country I remember visiting was Mallorca, Spain. Even at age 3 or 4, I recall sunny days, beach play, and delicious food (although I was picky!). Today, I’d fully embrace the local cuisine on a return visit.
I enjoy traveling in any season. My top destinations for each are:
Spring: Murcia, Spain
Summer: Norfolk, UK
Autumn: Cornwall, UK
Winter: Rome, Italy
Unfortunately, some areas affected by war or unrest are not safe for travel. Safety always comes first when planning trips.
Aberystwyth, Wales, during a school field trip in winter. Cold, wet, and hunting marine wildlife in rock pools made it memorable for all the wrong reasons!
Two highlights: An Italian road trip from Rome to Orvieto, Umbria, exploring small towns along the breathtaking countryside, and my childhood trips to Florida, including Disney World and the Keys.
One destination: Borneo. I’d love to volunteer at an orangutan sanctuary and explore the tropical landscapes. It’s a bucket-list adventure I can’t wait to achieve once travel opens up fully.
